Welcome back Beatniks!
Kelly here. Although I refuse to believe that summer break is coming to an end, I know it’s time to start preparing for the daunting school year ahead. In terms of stress, schoolwork, and style, a girl has a lot to think about before September rolls around.
During the first few weeks of school, you’ll be eager to make impressions and remind your friends just how fashionable you are. But as temperatures drop and stress spikes, fashion can very quickly drop to the bottom of everyone’s priority list, and understandably so. I mean who wants to be searching for accessories when you’ve only gotten two hours of sleep and you have an 8 am lecture that you’ll probably have to jog to? Definitely not me! HOWEVER, there are plenty of tips and tricks that I have discovered over the past two years that will make your life that much easier when it comes to staying fashionable.
– Lay out your clothes the day before
Laying out my outfit the night before class is a habit I picked up around grade two… and haven’t stopped since. The combination of loving fashion and making a speedy morning outfit choice don’t exactly pair very well, but the solution is so easy! Every night, I lay out what I want to wear for the next day; I don’t even have to give it a thought in the morning (I can let my mind stay focused on what I’ll be having for breakfast instead). This strategy also lowers the chances that I’ll take the “easy” route and reach for leggings and a sweatshirt. Even if I wake up 15 minutes before class starts, my outfit doesn’t have to suffer.
– Put all of your jewelry in plain sight
The likely-hood of you searching through your three different jewelry boxes to find the perfect gold necklace to match your sweater are probably pretty low. But imagine you’re walking out the door and that gold necklace is right in front of your eyes, and all you have to do is grab it and clasp it as your riding down the elevator. Now that sounds a little more doable.
Set up your jewelry so that you can see every single piece. “That’s easier said than done.” Uhhh actually, it’s just as easy said as it is done. Just buy a cork board, stick some thumbtacks in that baby and you have the perfect jewelry set up. You’ll be able to see all of your different necklaces (not to mention the adorable interior setup) so all it takes to complete an outfit in the morning is a quick glance at the wall. If you’re feeling crafty you can even even DIY a cork-board like I did!
-Invest in your shoes
This one took me a while to learn. I am absolutely guilty of trying to find the least expensive shoes possible. I need black booties? Okay, launch mission black booties under $20. Oh, well not only were the booties cheap in price, but in quality as well. Abort mission black booties under $20. I repeat, abort mission black booties under $20!
There is almost nothing worse than walking around in an uncomfortable pair of shoes all day. Almost nothing. The only thing worse is walking around in uncomfortable shoes all day in the snow. Now I really can’t think of anything worse. Take my advice, invest in one pair of nice boots that you can wear with nearly everything– my go-to is black booties. If Doc Martens are your style, I think they’re a great option because you can wear them in all weather conditions, and they add a clean grunge aspect any look. This way you won’t have to rely on your running sneakers to complete your boujee ensemble.
-Make sure you have comfort clothes that are cute
Lets face it ladies– we all have those days where the thought of skinny jeans is actually nausea-inducing. No, I will not squirm uncomfortably in my tiny seat in a lecture hall for the next three hours! Well, good thing you don’t have to.
When I used to go shopping, I would never buy sweatpants because I didn’t want to be looked at as lazy and unfashionable. Well the thing is, if you buy cute sweatpants… then problem solved! Buying comfort clothes is just as important as buying statement pieces. With trends like joggers, bomber jackets and sweatshirts, it has never been easier to look cool and comfortable when going to class.
Fashion shouldn’t be an added stress… so don’t make it one! Expressing yourself through your clothing is the best part of fashion. For me, when I look good I feel good. Starting the day off with a solid outfit is starting the day off on the right foot. I want to feel pretty and confident, not accentuate my tiredness by rolling up to class in my pajamas.
