The Modern Beatnik | A Lookbook

Welcome back Beatniks,

After over a year of BeatnikBold being BeatnikBold, we’ve decided to pay tribute to the fashion history that inspired us to think outside of the box. The youthful and off-beat mindset that created the subculture of the beatniks in the 1950s and early 1960s are some extraordinary moments in fashion; Shorts and pants were making their way into women’s fashion, neck-scarves were a must, and with the rise of Audrey Hepburn came the accentuating and rising of waistlines. Beatnik women changed the perception of femininity through clothing.

While the term ‘beatnik’ originated in the 1950s, it has mainly come to signify self expression and breaking the norms of societal behavior. This is where our inspiration came from: self expression, breaking norms, and being bold. Our main inspiration from the beatniks is rooted in their off-beat behavior, but their style is something that has infiltrated our closets and minds as well. Fashion trends are constantly recycled– we’re seeing the comeback of silk scarves, gingham, and high waistlines. Colors like red and yellow are HUGE this summer and were also staples of the 50s decade. We have given their style tips a try, using 1950s inspiration photography and our modern take on those inspirations~
